What Is Felt Roofing?
Felt roofing is a one of the oldest types of roofing. When the founder first started the business over 50 years ago, they would lay pour and roll, a system where you heat up the bitumen in a pot, pour it onto the surface and lay a membrane over the top. While there are a few companies that still do this, it has since been modernised and made safer with the torch on felt.
Torch on felt is a bitumen imbedded into a membrane with either a sanded or mineral finish.
The system can consist of 2 or 3 layers; a perforated underlay, a sanded underlay and then a mineral finish.
Felt roofing has been used for many years and we would always recommend this being the first option when replacing a roof. Time has proven that felt is incredibly reliable when installed correctly.
Felt Roofing Installation
Firstly, you need to prepare the roof. Whether this be priming the existing surface if the joist, decking and any other woodwork is in a good condition, or installing new 18mm sterling board decking.
You then install a sanded underlay and then the mineral finish.
A perforated underlay may be installed if there is a chance of movement on the joints or if you have a warm roof.
If you decide you would like a warm roof installed, it is recommended to use 120mm insulation, this will comply with building regulations.

Roofing felt underlay is a fundamental component of our roof fittings. The underlay is a water resistant material that we can apply directly to the roofing deck, forming the first layer of roofing material. Not only does this underlay improve the performance of the roof in withstanding wind and harsh weather, but it improves moisture resistance and reflects UV rays.
